The first Minsk balneary was opened in 1983 in one of the most beautiful districts of the city. It was a multipurpose health care establishment and had the following facilities: clinic with the departments of general medicine, genecology, neurology, department of physical therapy, belneary, department of therapeutic exercise. It provided such services as reflexology, functional and ultrasonic testing, X-ray, dentistry, laboratory tests. The balneary worked on a double-shift basis with 500 visits per shift.

The patients were treated with the help of mineral water of low and medium mineralization, sapropel mud, water, devices for physiotherapy, reflexology, therapeutic exercise, massage and psychotherapy. Over 150 000 people suffering from musculoskeletal, urogenital and nervous disorders, respiratory and blood diseases underwent treatment in the balnery.

The scientists of the Research Institute of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Physiotherapy, Institute of Post-Graduate Education of Physicians help organize treatment and implement new methods of treatment.

Igor N. Zhdanov was the Chief Executive Officer of the balneary for 15 years. He made an invaluable contribution to the development of resort treatment in the Republic of Belarus.


In 1987-1988, after the Chernobyl disaster, the Republican prevention and early treatment center for children was established. It was located on ul. Krasnoarmeiskaya, 15. Yuri M. Silich was the Chief Executive Officer of the center. The children, who suffered from the disaster, were monitored and underwent regular check-ups. The facilities included department of functional testing, department of physiotherapy, x-ray department, laboratory and operating department.

In 1988-1990, the center was reorganized into the department of prevention and early treatment of the clinic under the Research Institute of Radiation Medicine. Larisa A. Sivolobova was in charge of the new department. After the reorganization, the inpatient department moved to the clinic under the Research Institute of Radiation Medicine.

Over 500 000 visitors were provided services in the department of prevention and early treatment during the time of its existence. Almost 20% of the population, i.e. 2 million people, who were affected by the Chernobyl disaster, were the patients of the department. History of the department in figures: 311 ambulance calls, 3 000 working days and 123 000 people examined.

In 1990, the department became a separate establishment – the Republican Clinic of Radiation Medicine. Valery A. Rzheutsky was the Chief Executive Officer of the clinic. The clinic consisted of 2 children’s units, 2 adults’ units, laboratory, departments of endocrinology, diagnostics, functional testing, physiotherapy, mobile medical services and operating department, and child psychologist’s room.

In 1998, the Republican Clinic of Radiation Medicine moved to Makaenka 17, where Minsk balneary was located. Later, it became a division of the balneary.


The Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneotherapy also deals with endocrine disorders.

In 1938, the Council of Ministers of the BSSR ordered to establish a goiter prevention and early treatment station. The main purpose of the station was to study, detect and treat thyroid disorders, mainly goiter.

The station started to work again after the Great Patriotic War. In 1949, the station was reorganized into the Republican Goiter Clinic. Endocrinologists of the Department of Endocrinology of the Institute of Post Graduate Education of Physicians of BSSR took trainings in this clinic.

In 1987, the Republican Goiter Clinic became the Republican Endocrinology Clinic.

In 1995, it was reorganized into the Republican Endocrinology Center.

Since 2005, the Republican Endocrinology Center has been a subdivision of the Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneotherapy.


Today, the Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneotherapy manages and treats endocrine disorders. Besides, the staff consults, examines and treats the citizens, who suffered from the Chernobyl disaster. It also provides paid services. Patients and people with disabilities may participate in rehabilitation programs and undergo non-drug treatment.

Over 240 000 citizens of Belarus and other states visit the Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Belneotherapy each year. About 180 rehabilitation certificates are sold each month.

The Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneotherapy performs research and practical activities in cooperation with the specialists of the Belarusian Medical Academy of Post Graduate Education and Belarusian State Medical University. The specialists of the Professor’s Medical Advisory Center, specialists of the Department of Endocrinology, Reflexology, Cardiology, Medicine, Physiotherapy, Health Resort Medicine, specialists of the Central Research Laboratory regularly consult patients.

The staff of the center implements and applies the latest methods of treatment developed in close cooperation with the Research Institute of Medical Examination and Rehabilitation, Republican Research and Practice Center of Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology, Department of Endocrinology and General medicine of the Belarusian State Medical University and Belarusian Medical Academy of Post- Graduate Education.


Thus, the Republican Center of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneotherapy is a multipurpose medical center with a 25-year history of health resort treatment, clinical trials, detection and treatment of endocrine disorders, rehabilitation of patients and people with disabilities.
